SRI LANKA-UNREST-DEATH
Sri Lankan policemen inspect a bullet-riddled body while a relative (REAR) grieves in Vavuniya,some 260 kilometres (160 miles) north of Colombo, 22 February 2007. Three civilians were found shot dead in the northern Sri Lankan town, on the eve of the fifth anniversary of a truce that now holds only on paper, police said. An upsurge in violence has recently swept the town which is the gateway to the Tamil rebel-held Wanni region, and similar grisly finds have become an almost daily occurrence. The Oslo-arranged ceasefire went into effect from 23 February 2002, a day after a copy of the pact was formally lodged with Norwegian peace brokers by then premier Ranil Wickremesinghe at a ceremony in Vavuniya.
