POLAND-GREENPEACE-FOREST
Residents of Augustow protest 25 February 2007 against Greenpeace militants who want to stop the construction of a highway through the Rospuda nature reserve near their northeastern Polish town. The residents are tired of trucks driving throught the city, and the crosses symbolize victims of car accidents. A group of about 100 Greenpeace activists have been camping in the reserve for over a week. Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said 23 February 2007 that he favored a local referendum on the controversial construction of a section of trans-European highway in the protected forest and wetland region.
