PERU-SURFING-PROMISED LAND

Peruvian students form the "Olas Peru" surfing school strecht out directed by Venezuelan "Amercol" trainer (C, in orange) prior to enter the sea at Lima's Punta Roquitas beach, 06 February, 2007. According to national exporting organizations Peru has exported US$ 364,069 in surfboards and accessories during 2006. About 68% went to the US, followed by Japan, New Zeeland, and other countries. After soccer, surfing could be considered the national sport in the country with an estimate of 60,000 Peruvians surfers. Archaeological evidences from 2000-year old textiles and ceramics of pre-Hispanic cultures, shows ancient Peruvians surfing waves with boats made of vegetable fibers. This practice continue nowadays by the fishermen of the north coast. However after Peruvian Sofia Mulanovich became the first South American, man or woman, to claim the World Championship Tour (W.C.T.) crown in 2004 this sport has gained adherents becoming a very popular practice among the youth.
