China will continue to strengthen its armed forces, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said in comments in his opening speech of the annual session of the National People's Congress, applauded by military leaders who want the hardware to counter new threats and take back Taiwan. Wen made the pledge while addressing nearly 3,000 lawmakers a day after the Chinese government announced the military budget for 2007 would rise 17.8 percent from last year to 350.9 billion yuan (about 45 billion USD).
