IRAQ-SHIITE-RELIGION
Shiite Muslim pilgrims gather outside the shrine of Imam Ali in the city of Najaf 18 March 2007. Some two million Shiites gathered in Najaf to mark the death of Ali ibn Abi Taleb, an early Islamic leader. Abi Taleb is revered by Sunni Muslims as the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph and as a foremost religious authority on the Koran and Islamic jurisprudence. Shiites consider him the first Imam appointed by the prophet Mohammad and the first rightful caliph, they also beleive he was born as a Mohammad helper. Ali was the cousin of the prophet, and after marriage to Fatima Zahra, he also became Mohammad's son-in-law. AFP PHOTO/QASSEM ZEIN
