INDIA-FOOD-VENDORS
TO GO WITH Lifestyle-India-culture-food-safety,sched-FEATURE by Elizabeth Roche
This picture taken 22 February, 2007 shows an Indian street food vendor handing a plate of snacks to a customer at his road side stall in New Delhi. Cramped street corners choking with vendors selling piping hot tea, snacks or even full meals, cooked in questionable hygenic conditions have been a part and parcel of life in the Indian capital for decades. But all this is set to become a thing of the past if a February ruling by India's Supreme Court -- part of new hawking and squatting regulations for New Delhi that has a population of about 14 million people -- is implemented. In its ruling, the court asked Delhi's municipal authorities to clamp down on the vendors who freely roam the capital's streets offering a variety of mouth watering food from a venue of their choice.
