US-COURT-PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION
The Rev. Rob Schenck (C), president of the National Clergy Council, leads pro-life advocates in prayer on the steps of the Supreme Court 18 April 2007 in Washington, DC. The Court in a 5-4 ruling upheld a federal partial-birth abortion ban. The court retrenched access to abortion for the first time in more than a generation upholding a 2003 federal law restricting access to the rare but controversial late-term abortion procedure. The bellwether ruling is a major victory for conservative forces in the United States, which have battled for decades to reverse the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade law establishing a woman's legal right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.
