ECUADOR-AMAZON-YASUNI-ECOLOGY-OIL
TO GO WITH AFP STORY
View of the Napo River as it runs through the Yasuni National Park in the Ecuadorean Amazon region, 300 km east of Quito, on May 16th, 2007. Disproportionate logging in the park, specially of cedars and mahogany trees, is threatening the survival of the few remaining groups of indigenous peoples known to live in isolation in Ecuador. The Yasnui, a UNESCO 950.000 hectare biosphere reserve, also has the Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tambococha (ITT): the country's largest untapped oil fields, which contain a proven one billion barrels of oil equivalent.
