SURFING-TAHITI-US-HOBGOOD-BILLABONG PRO
Damien Hobgood of the US celebrates his victory in front of the crowds in the channel of Teahupoo, Tahiti moments after clinching the Billabong Pro title in a 3-meter surf, 16 May 2007. Hobgood defeated current ratings leader Mick Fanning of Australia by less than a point in the dying minutes of the closely contested final to take his first win of the 2007 season. Hobgood moved into third place on the Fosters ASP World Tour and pocketed US$30 000 in prize money. The Billabong Pro is the third event on the Fosters Menos ASP World Tour and features the top 45 surfers in the world and three wildcards. The Billabong Pro takes place at the dangerous left hand breaking wave of Teahupoo, approximately one-km out to sea on a shallow reef pass. AFP PHOTO
