AUSTRALIA-ABORIGINES-RIGHTS
TO GO WITH AUSTRALIA-ABORIGINES-SCHED-FEATURE by Neil Sands
This picture taken 17 May, 2007 shows an Aboriginal elder sitting in front of his house at Nyewente (Trucking yards) camp at Australia's "red centre" in Alice Springs. After 40 years of landmark vote, when Aborigines were recognised as full Australian citizens for the first time, indiginous communities are still off the map marked as either blank or parkland. At the 18 communities there are huge social problems amongst the 3,000 Aborigines living there with high rates of alcohol abuse and domestic violence. AFP PHOTO/Anoek DE GROOT
