JAPAN-LAW-MENDA
Japanese Sakae Menda, a former inmate who was mistakenly convicted of a double murder in 1948 after being tortured and forcibly signing a confession, subsequently served 34 years on death row in a prison, reacts as he attends a news conference at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan in Tokyo, 11 June 2007. A court in 1983 finally acknowledged the police had concealed his alibi that he was not at the scene of the crime, and became the first person to escape Japan's death row. AFP PHOTO / KAZUHIRO NOGI
