FILE-IRAQ-TRIAL-ANFAL-DEFENDANTS-COMBO
(FILES) A combo of file pictures created 23 June 2007 shows (Top L-R) Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as "Chemical Ali" and his co-defendants Sabir al-Duri, Sultan Hashim al-Tai, (Bottom L-R) Taher al-Ani, Farhan al-Juburi and Hussein Rashid al-Tikriti during the "Anfal" genocide trial in Baghdad in December 2006 and January 2007. The Iraqi High Tribunal is set to give its verdict 24 June 2007 on six former aides of Saddam Hussein accused of slaughtering 182,000 Kurdish villagers during a 1988 military campaign in northern Iraq. The most prominent defendant is Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam who is widely known as "Chemical Ali" for his alleged use of chemical gases. He faces a charge of genocide, while the five others in the dock are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, all charges that carry the death penalty.
