ITALY-RELIGION-LATIN MASS
Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro Carambula prepares the wine before the celebration of Latin Tridentine mass in St.Giuseppe a Capo le Case church in central Rome 01 July 2007. Pope Benedict XVI will publish a decree in the coming days allowing greater use of mass in Latin, signalling a bid to heal a decades-old split in the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope sent a document to senior bishops around the world and a decree will be published "in the coming days," a Vatican statement said. The Pontiff will release a long personal letter to accompany the "motu proprio" (Latin for "of one's own accord", meaning the pope did not take counsel from others) decree. The virtual abandonment of the Tridentine mass after the Vatican II Ecumenical Council in 1965 was one of the causes of a breakaway led by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1970. Lefebvre was excommunicated by Pope John Paul II in 1988 and died in 1991. AFP PHOTO / ALBERTO PIZZOLI
