RUSSIA-BALTICS-GERMANY-TOURISM-GAMBLING-PROPERTY
TO GO WITH AFP FRENCH STORY BY CONOR HUMPHRIES: Mayor of the town of Yantarny, Alexander Blinov, points towards the bay of his town, 22 June 2007. For more than a century, Yantarny (former Palmnicken) made a living from mining amber for jewellery. Today, the Baltic Sea town is looking to a new kind of glitz: a multi-billion-dollar Las Vegas-style gambling centre. The world's largest amber mine, founded long before Soviet forces seized the surrounding Kaliningrad region from Germany in World War II, still provides some 300 jobs in this town of 6,500.
