AUSTRALIA-ART-ABORIGINE-AUCTION

A Sotheby's employee (L) walks past a painting by Aboriginal artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri titled "Warlugulong 1977", in Sydney, 12 July 2007. Warlugulong 1977 along with other Aboriginal paintings is to be auctioned in Melbourne on 24 July, and it is expected to fetch between 1.8 - 2.5 million Australian dollars (1.55-2.15 million USD), breaking the record for the most expensive work of Aboriginal art sold at auction of 1.56 million Australian dollars (909,564 USD) for Emily Kame Kngwarreye's "Earth Creation". Clifford Possum's iconic "Warlugulong 1977" is considered by many to be the most significant Western Desert or 'dot' painting in a private collection and illustrates how the artist's country is infused with a complex webbing of ancient dreaming paths and song lines that weave their way throughout his ancestral lands.
