PHILIPPINES-ITALY-KIDNAP-UNREST-CLASH
The flag draped coffins bearing the bodies of 14 slain Philippine marines are lined up during a funeral wake in the church at the military base in southern Zamboanga city 12 July 2007. Marine troops searching for the kidnapped Italian Catholic priest Giancarlo Bossi in nearby Basilan island were ambushed by combined group of Islamic militants from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and al-Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf killling 14 soldiers and beheading 10. Philippine forces mounted an offensive against Islamic militants who killed the government troopers despite concern the action may damage efforts to rescue the kidnapped priest.
