GERMANY-ECONOMY-PRIZE-ERHARD-MERKEL

German Chancellor Angela Merkel stands next to a bust of Ludwig Erhard during the awarding ceremony of the Ludwig-Erhard-Prize 18 July 2007 in Fuerth, southern Germany. The award, named after German politician and Chancellor of West Germany from 1963 to 1966 Ludwig Erhard, is given yearly to promote information and discussion on social market economy. The name of Ludwig Erhard, who also was Minister of Economics under the first Chancellor of the German Federal Republic Konrad Adenauer, is associated with the introduction of the currency Deutsche Mark and with the abolishment of price-fixing and production controls that had been enacted by the military administration.
