Ultra Orthodox Jews read from the book of Eicha (Book of Lamentations) during the annual Tisha B’Av (Ninth of Av) memorial, commemorating the destruction of ancient Jerusalem temples, in the Ultra Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim in Jerusalem, 23 July 2007. Religious Jews in Israel and around the world began traditional prayers and fasting today to commemorate the destruction of the First and Second holy temples in Jerusalem. Commemorated under the Hebrew calendar as the Ninth of Av, worshippers will gather tomorrow before the Wailing Wall, the last remaining vestige of the Second Temple, in occupied and annexed east Jerusalem which Israel captured in 1967.
