TANZANIA-SUDAN-DARFUR-TALKS-UN-AU-REBELS
Khamis Abdullah Abakar (rear 2nd R) and his co-delegates from SLA/Khamis movement meet with Jan Eliasson (L), UN Special Envoy to Sudan, and Salim Ahmed Salim, AU Special Envoy to Sudan, (foreground C) during the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) non-signatories conference in Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge in Arusha 04 August 2007. Darfur's myriad rebel groups sat at the same table for the first time in more than a year at a meeting in Tanzania, aiming to present a united front in future peace talks with Khartoum. The landmark talks between the political and military leaders of the many factions that have emerged in Darfur over the past four and half years of conflict were overshadowed however by the absence of two key rebel figures.
