US-CARIBBEAN-WEATHER-DEAN

This 20 August, 2007 NOAA color enhanced satellite image shows Hurricane Dean churning in the Caribbean. Powerful Hurricane Dean threatened to gather even more punch as it barreled toward Mexico's tourist beaches Monday after killing at least five people in the Caribbean and battering Jamaica. Forecasters feared that when it slams ashore during the night, the deadly storm could pack sustained winds in excess of 249 kilometers (155 miles) per hour, making it a rare category five storm, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Dean's track and speed had the deadly storm slamming ashore on the Yucatan Peninsula, south of the tourist resort of Cancun and north of the Belize border well before dawn on Tuesday. While officials said Cancun would likely be spared the worst of the storm, they took no chances, and were evacuating some 90,000 tourists from the famed vacation destination and neighboring resorts. In addition, some 13,000 workers were evacuated from more than 140 Gulf of Mexico oil platforms. Some of the offshore oil platforms and rigs on the US side of the Gulf of Mexico also were evacuated, though experts said they did not appear to be directly threatened. AFP PHOTO/HO/NOAA GETTY OUT
