MIDEAST-PALESTINIAN-ISRAEL-GAZA-CONFLICT-SURF-OFFBEAT
Palestinians carry surf boards past cement blocks after they were brought across from the Israeli side of the Erez Crossing which separates Israel from the Palestinian Gaza Strip, 21 August 2007. Dorian Paskowitz, an 87-year-old American Jew and devout wave rider, decided to rustle up the support of Israeli companies and donors to buy 15 boards and gear for the benefit of the Palestinian children and peace, sending the boards into the Gaza Strip. He came up with the initiative in his home in Hawaii some two weeks ago when he saw a picture of "two surfers in Gaza with a stinking board," he said. Gaza, under the control of the Islamist Hamas movement, has been under a crunching international economic boycott for almost 18 months, which deepened the suffering of the residents in the world's most densely populated and extremely poor area.
