GREECE-FLOODS
A woman tries to get out of her house which was flooded following strong torrential rain 02 September 2007. Greece's embattled Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis called for an overhaul of the state machinery in response to this summer's unprecendented and ruinous fires, as the toll climbed to 64 today. Meanwhile, Greece's European Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas, warned that even when the fires were put out, the scorched areas could suffer more misery such as flooding because the ground is very dry and "water will not be able to soak into if it rains".
