AFGHANISTAN-UNREST-MILITARY
TO GO WITH AFGHANISTAN-UNREST-MILITARY BY SARDAR AHMED
In this picture taken 18 September 2007, Newly-trained Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers empty their guns after a exercise on the outskirts of Kabul. Covered in dust and sweating in the unforgiving midday heat, Afghan soldier Rahimullah and his fellow troopers practiCe shooting at a wooden dummy at a military training ground in Kabul. The skinny man in his late 20s is on his last day of training he started at the US-funded Kabul Military Training Centre (KMTC) about three months ago.It has been tough, he says, recalling strenuous drills overseen by Western instructors that included weapons use, tracking an enemy and evacuating a fallen comrade from the battlefield. The crash course under their belts, these 800 soldiers will soon be on remote frontlines where men educated ahead of them are already fighting a bloody Taliban-led insurgency.
