FILES-NETHERLANDS-WAR-CRIMES-MRKSIC-SLJIVANCANIN
(FILES) -- In this combo, Former Yugoslav army officer Mile Mrksic (L) and his subordinate Veselin Sljivancanin (R) are pictured at the UN War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, 10 October 2005. The UN court at The Hague convicted 27 September 2007 the two Serb officers for their roles in the 1991 Vukovar massacre of 194 Croats and sentenced them to up to 20 years in prison, but acquitted a third man. Former commander of the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army Mile Mrksic was sentenced to 20 years and Sljivancanin was sentenced to five years in prison for aiding and abetting the torture and murder of 194 Croat prisoners of war taken from the Vukovar hospital in November 1991. The capture of Vukovar by the Yugoslav army and Serb rebels in 1991 is considered a pivotal event in the 1991-95 war that pitted Croatians against Belgrade-backed Croatian Serbs. AFP PHOTO/ANP/POOL
