FILES-WARCRIMES-CROATIA-SERBIA-JUDGEMENT
(FILES) File picture of former Yugoslav army officers Mile Mrksic (R), Miroslav Radic (L) and Veselin Sljivancanin (C) appearing at the UN War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague, 10 October 2005. A UN court, 27 September 2007 convicted the two Serb officers Mile Mrksic and Veselin Sljivancanin for their roles in the 1991 Vukovar massacre of 194 Croats and sentenced them to up to 20 years in prison, but acquitted Miroslav Radic. The capture of Vukovar by the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army and Serb rebels in 1991 is considered a pivotal event in the 1991-95 war that pitted Croatians against Belgrade-backed Croatian Serbs. The town was razed and more than 1,000 civilians were killed during the three-month siege and its aftermath. AFP PHOTO POOL/ANP/ROB KEERIS/FILES
