US-IG NOBEL PRIZES
Ig Nobel Prize 2007 winners Johanna E.M.H. van Bronswijk (L) of Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, Mayu Yamamoto (2nd L) of the International Medical Center of Japan, Brian Witcombe (2nd R) of Gloucestershire Royal NHS Foundation Trust, Gloucester, Britain and Glenda Browne (R) of Blaxland, Blue Mountains, Australia, 04 October 2007, at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Van Bronswijk studied mites and small creatures in beds, Yamamoto developed a way to extract vanillin -- vanilla fragrance and flavoring -- from cow dung, Witcombe studied sword swallowing and Browne studied the word, "the". The prizes are given by the Harvard-based science humor magazine "Annals of Improbable Research" and honor "achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think". AFP PHOTO/Stan HONDA
