US-ZOO-BONOBO
A one-month old, critically endangered bonobo is getting a new lease on life thanks to her caretakers 09 October 2007 at the San Diego Zoo. Mali, which translates to "something valuable" in Swahili, was born 04 September 2007. Her mother experienced a very difficult birth and Zoo veterinarians and keepers had to quickly intervene to ensure the baby's survival. Although she was in critical condition the first couple weeks, keepers report she is progressing nicely. She is growing strong, eating well and gaining weight nearly every day. Mali visits her bonobo family every day, but spends much of her time eating and sleeping in the Children's Zoo nursery. She currently gets seven bottle feedings a day. Bonobos are a very rare and endangered species native to the forests and lowlands of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Incorrectly but commonly called "pygmy chimpanzee" this species is only slightly smaller than the more commonly recognized species of chimpanzee and has dark pigmentation on its feet, hands and face. The San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park are two of only a few zoological institutions in the United States who works with this species.
