US-ANIMALS-ZOO-CAIMAN LIZARD
In this photo released by the Zoological Society of San Diego, one of two caiman lizards that have hatched for the first time at the San Diego Zoo is shown displaying a defense mechanism on 18 October 2007. Ten more eggs from this threatened species are incubating in behind-the-scenes hatcheries. This is only the third hatching of these large lizards in the United States. Native to South America, particularly the Amazon Basin in Peru and Brazil they can grow to four feet (1.2 meters) in length and weigh up to six pounds (2.7kgs). Despite their size and fierce appearance, they feed mostly on insects and snails. Caiman lizards are threatened due to the hunting for their skins and habitat loss.
