French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner (C) reviews French UN troops at their base in the southern Lebanese village of al-Tiri, 20 October 2007. Kouchner, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema arrived in Beirut late yesterday in the latest international bid to end a standoff between the Western-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition. The three reiterated their commitment toward ending a long-running political crisis in Lebanon that is blocking the election of a president. Speaking at the base of the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL in south Lebanon, they told reporters they would impress upon Lebanese leaders during their one-day visit the importance of breaking the political deadlock that marks the country's worst political crisis since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war.
