PHILIPPINES-ENVIRONMENT-POVERTY
TO GO WITH AFP STORY Phillippines-environment-poverty by Jason Gutierrez
Jane Walker treads over Manila's muddy Smokey Mountain dumpsite 03 October 2007 to reach out to children laboring as scavengers. The 43 year old former executive with a British publishing house have been a regular fixture for over 10 years searching for lost souls to feed and send to school to rescue them from their wretched poverty. Walker first arrived in Manila as a tourist in 1996 expecting a tropical paradise with stretches of white sand and beaches instead she stumbled onto an overpopulated and chaotic city where children were left to beg on the streets. She decided to leave London and set up the Philippine Christian Fund offering basic elementary education to children of garbage pickers and vocational training for their parents. Residents call the dedicated Englishwoman, the angel of the dump. AFP PHOTO/JASON GUTIERREZ
