EGYPT-BRITAIN-AUSTRALIA-WW II-ANNIVERSARY
Royal British Legion National Standard Bearer Julia Poulter from London, practices in the British Commonwealth cemetery at the World War II battle site of El-Alamein in northern Egypt, 26 October 2007, during preperations for a ceremony tomorrow commemorating the 65th anniversary of the famous battle. The 1942 battle between British field marshal Bernard Montgomery and German general Erwin Rommel commanding the Africa Corps that had struck deep into Egypt threatening the British Commonwealth forces' vital supply line across the Suez Canal. The success of this battle turned the tide in the North African Campaign and the Allied victory at El-Alamein ended Axis hopes of occupying Egypt, controlling access to the Suez Canal, and gaining access to the Middle Eastern oil fields marking the end of Axis expansion in Africa.
