FRANCE-POLITICS-STRIKE-DEMO
Thousands of people demonstrate 20 November 2007 in Marseille southern France, as part of a nationwide day of protest of French civil servants, joining a week-long stoppage by transport workers. State employees, including teachers, postal workers and air traffic controllers, launched their one-day strike in support of demands for pay increases and an end to job cuts. The government also faces a campaign by students against a law that allows universities to raise money from private sources, and by magistrates against the closure of local courts. The government had previously said it would only enter negotiations once the strike was finished, but Labour Minister Xavier Bertrand said last 18 November it would attend talks 21 November if there was "a back-to-work dynamic".
