BANGLADESH-US-CYCLONE
In this handout picture taken 23 November 2007, Bangladeshi soldiers use a stretcher to unload a shipment of bottled water delivered by US Navy Marines of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 261, the aviation element of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in Barisal, marking the first U.S. military aid to arrive in Bangladesh. The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and the 22nd MEU are supporting relief operations at the request of the government of Bangladesh. The US navy has begun airlifting urgently needed supplies of clean drinking water to thousands of survivors of Bangladesh's devastating Cyclone Sidr, an official said 24 November 2007.
More than 3,400 people died and hundreds of thousands left homeless after the powerful storm on November 15 demolished entire villages.
Relief efforts have been dogged by problems, leaving villagers desperately short of water, food and medicine more than a week after the killer cyclone struck. AFP PHOTO/US NAVY MARINE CORPS/HO/ Cpl. Peter R. MILLER RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE
