CHINA-DAM-THREEGORGES-YICHANG-COAL
A man pulls a cart loaded with bricks of coal used for heating and cooking by millions across China along a street in Yichang near the Three Gorges Dam in central China's Hubei province, 26 November 2007. Resettlement for residents in and around the dam region began in 1997 with only two directions, up and out. Chinese government officials and scientists recently acknowledged problems caused by the huge Three Gorges Dam that critics of the project have long warned about, including the mandatory resettlement of 1.4 million people from now-submerged areas, dispersing and disrupting centuries-old communities, with another four million from the area being "encouraged" to move by 2020.
