Broken promises caused Wang Wenju and her husband to move back to Gaoyang, 29 November 2007, in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, where she now lives in a decrepit shack built of cast-off materials and Yangtze River flotsam under a bridge. Critics of the Three Gorges Dam project have long alleged massive corruption in the resettlement programme, but a senior Chinese government official denied any problems, reflecting official efforts to downplay abuses.
