CHINA-DAM-THREEGORGES-RESETTLEMENT-CORRUPTION
A man stands at the front of a boat on the Pengxi River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, between Yunyang and Gaoyang, 29 November 2007, in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. Some 4,000 people have returned to Gaoyang, according to a longtime resident who asked not to be named for fear of retribution by local authorities, as many who managed to move away had come back, complaining they were denied promised job training and funds for school fees and buying new homes or farmland. Critics of the Three Gorges Dam project have long alleged massive corruption in the resettlement programme, but a senior Chinese government official denied any problems, reflecting official efforts to downplay abuses.
