GERMANY-SINTI-ROMA-COMMEMORATION
Sigfried Heilig holds a candle as he stands in front of a furnace of the former concentration camp Sachsenhausen near Berlin, 19 December 2007. Heilig, whose Sinti and Roma relatives died at the camp during World War II, took part in a commemoration ceremony for the victims of the Holocaust. The deportation of 23.000 Sinti and Roma from 11 European countries startet 65 years ago, after Interior Minister and SS-commander Heinrich Himmler ordered the mass murder of the ethnic groups of Sinti and Roma in his so-called Auschwitz-Erlass (Auschwitz-Decree) from 16 December 1942.
