SLOVAKIA-AUSTRIA-EU-BORDER-SCHENGEN-FICO-GUSENBAUER
Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico (L) and Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer (R) saw a border barrier 20 December 2007 in Petrzalka, on the border with the Austrian border city of Bert, near Slovakia's capital Bratislava. Slovakia and Austria kicked off the festivities today for nine new, mostly eastern European countries joining the Schengen Treaty, tearing down the last remnants of the Iron Curtain. A wave of celebrations, concerts, fireworks -- even a disco evening at the Petrzalka-Berg crossing on the Slovak-Austrian frontier -- were planned to mark the milestone event at borders that used to mark Europe's East-West divide.
