IRELAND-LIFESTYLE-SOUTH POLE
This handout photo received 09 January 2007 courtesy of Pat Falvey at Beyond Endurance Expedition shows (L-R)Pat Falvey, Jonathon Bradshaw, Shaun Menzies and Clare O'Leary. A four-strong team of explorers have become the first Irish expedition to reach the South Pole, they told RTE state radio 09 January 2007. The team were hailed by President Mary McAleese and Prime Minister Bertie Ahern for their achievement, which made front-page news in Ireland. Led by Pat Falvey, 50, an adventurer and Mount Everest climber from Cork, southern Ireland, the three men and one woman reached the Pole at 1930 GMT Tuesday, according to their beyondendurance.ie website. The exploit came 100 years to the month since the Irish-born legendary Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton set off on the first of his ill-fated attempts to reach the South Pole. Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen was the first to reach the Pole on December 14, 1911. McAleese said: "Occurring one century after fellow Irishman Ernest Shackleton's first attempt on the Pole, the expedition's achievement is particularly poignant."I congratulate Pat Falvey, Clare O'Leary, Jonathon Bradshaw and Shaun Menzies on their remarkable accomplishment, and send my very best wishes to their many supporters in this mammoth undertaking."
