Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda,(R) speaks to a group of plaintiffs in hepatitis C damages lawsuits against the state and pharmaceutical company at the prime minister's official residence in Tokyo 15 January 2008. Earlier in the day the plaintiffs signed a basic accord with the government to compensate the patients who contracted hepatitis C from tainted blood products, marking a landmark victory in the five-year legal battle of some 200 patients. At least 10,000 people are estimated to have contracted hepatitis C, a potentially fatal disease, after being given fibrinogen, which is used to stop bleeding. AFP PHOTO / Koji Sasahara / POOL
