JAPAN-AUSTRALIA-WHALING-HOSTAGES

This combo of handout pictures, released from the Institute of Cetacean Research 15 January 2008, shows environmental group Sea Shepherd members Australian Benjamin Potts (L, top) and Briton Giles Lane (R, top) and being sprayed with water as they travel by a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) (below) by Japan's whaling vessel Yushin Maru No.2 in the the Southern Ocean. Japanese whalers said they are holding captive two activists who "illegally" boarded their vessel in the Southern Ocean, where they plan to hunt and kill 1,000 of the mammals. Japan said the two activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society were being held in an office aboard the ship, and accused them of throwing acid onto the ship's decks.
