BELGIUM-EU-ECONOMY-FINANCE
Slovenian Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk smiles 22 January 2008 before an Economy and Finance council meeting at EU headquarters in Brussels. EU monetary affairs commissioner Joaquin Almunia said 22 January 2008 that the global economy did not face a recession as global stocks plunged deep into the red on fears that US growth was grinding to a halt. EU governments openly voiced doubts 22 January 2008 that a US stimulus plan would avert recession in the world's biggest economy as stock markets suffered a second day of losses. But despite concern about the impact in Europe of US slowdown, EU finance chiefs meeting in Brussels voiced confidence that the rest of the world did not also face the risk of a recession.
