IRAQ-ARCHAEOLOGY-TUNNELS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY HASSAN ABDEL ZAHRA
Iraqi Shiite cleric Sheikh Ahmed Kashef al-Ghataa (L) walks through an ancient underground tunnel under his house in the Shrine city of Najaf in central Iraq, 18 January 2008. Najaf is known for its network of historic tunnels that were once used as shelters to protect the city's mainly Shiite Muslim residents from invaders. Today, Iraqi scientists are working to map out this subterranean peculiarity of the city, which above ground is dominated by the gilded domes of the mausoleum of Imam Ali, founder of Shiism, who died in 661.
