OLY-2008-CHN-COUNTDOWN-6MONTHS
TO GO WITH: OLY-2008-CHN-COUNTDOWN-6MONTHS by Charles Whelan
The surrounding areas of the National Aquatics Center (L), or Water Cube, and the National Stadium (R), or Birds Nest, are kept spotlessly clean during a recent winter morning on January 28, 2008 in Beijing when the host venue for swimming and diving events at the 2008 Olympics was previewed to the media. China's 40 billion dollar welcome mat is almost in place as Beijing prepares to woo the world, barring unwelcome guests, to the August Olympic Games. The city that won the right to host the Games in 2001 has gone on a massive spending spree on infrastructure and the last piece in the jigsaw will fit into place in April or May when the spectacular main stadium, known as the Bird's Nest, is completed.
