AUSTRIA-ARTS-LEOPOLD-MUSEUM

People pass by the Leopold Museum in Vienna on February 26, 2008 as part of 140th anniversary of the birth of Austrian expressionist Albin Egger-Lienz. Austrian Jewish Community (IKG) President Ariel Muzicant has called for closure of the Leopold Museum in Vienna's Museums quartier pending amendment of the law on return of stolen art. The reason is the presence of 14 paintings by Austrian artist Albin Egger-Lienz on exhibit there that were allegedly stolen from their owners by the Nazis. The Jewish community is demanding restitution of several of the exhibit's paintings stolen by the Nazis as Austria prepares to commemorate the 70 th anniversary of the Anschluss (the annexation of Austria into Greater Germany in 1938) on March 13.
