FRANCE-POLYNESIA-POLITICS
Newly-designated President of French Polynesia, pro-Paris veteran Gaston Flosse (C) arrives at the Papeete courthouse on February, 29 2008 to be questioned in connection with a complaint lodged by his new political ally former pro-indepence president Oscar Temaru in 2004. Political instability has meant frequent changes of government in French Polynesia whose best-known island is Tahiti. Flosse has twice been investigated for corruption--he was cleared of charges on appeal in one case, and was placed under formal investigation in 2003 for employing fictitious employees in another, but no charges were filed.
