SUDAN-UNREST-PEACE-OIL-ENVIRONMENT
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY BOGONKO BOSIRE
Sudanese children stand on February 13, 2008 near an abandoned borehole, contaminated with chemicals from the White Nile Petroleum Operating Company (WNPOC), a consortium led by Malaysia's Petronas, in Rier in south Sudan's Unity State. The chemicals from the the oil giant also threaten the Sudd wetlands, the world's largest maze of swamps, lagoons and tributaries, a fact that has caused local viillagers to decry to South Sudan authorities, the oil mining in the area blaming it for spreading disease and ravaging the environment.
