People light candles on the 70th anniversary of the Anschluss, or annexation, of Austria to Hitler's Nazi regime on March 12, 2008 IN Vienna's Heldenplatz (Heroes' Square). One candle for each Austrian victim of the Nazi regime, 80,000 candles, were lit on the very square where Adolf Hitler, himself Austrian-born, announced his country's annexation by the Third Reich on March 12, 1938, cheered on by some 250,000 people.
