IRAQ-US-WAR-5YEARS
TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY JACQUES CHARMELOT
A destitue Iraqi man gestures as he pushes his children on a cart in central Baghdad on March 12, 2008. Five years after US-led troops swept across Iraq and captured Saddam Hussein cowering in a hole, the dictator is dead and an elected government sits in Baghdad -- but Iraqis remain beset by kidnappings, shootings, suicide bombings, political stalemate, and the humiliation of a foreign occupation. The economy, the main concern of Iraqis after security, is a wreck, while the level of unemployment is between 25 and 50 percent of the workforce, for a population of some 25 million, according to government figures. Public services like water and electricity have yet to be fully restored, despite construction projects and announcements that service has been re-established. AFP PHOTO/ALI YUSSEF
