FRANCE-MILITARY-WWI-HISTORY
French President Nicolas Sarkozy (front) and his predecessor Jacques Chirac (back) pay their respect by the coffin of Lazare Ponticelli, the last French veteran of World War I, who died on March 12, 2008 aged 110, during a national ceremony on March 17, 2008 at the Invalides in Paris. The president laid a wreath in honour of the war's 8.5 million "poilus", the affectionate nickname meaning hairy or tough that had been given to French foot soldiers since Napoleonic times but became associated with World War I.
